Ladies and Gentlemen, 女士们,先生们:
I'm only going to talk to you just for a minute or so this evening, because I have some -- some very sad news for all of you -- Could you lower those signs, please? -- I have some very sad news for all of you, and, I think, sad news for all of our fellow citizens, and people who love peace all over the world; and that is that Martin Luther King was shot and was killed tonight in Memphis, Tennessee. 今晚我只打算和你们谈一分钟左右,因为我有一些——一些非常悲伤的消息要告诉你们——请把那些牌子放下来好吗?——我有一些非常悲伤的消息要告诉你们,我认为,这也是所有同胞和全世界热爱和平的人们的悲伤消息;那就是马丁·路德·金今晚在田纳西州孟菲斯被枪杀身亡。
Martin Luther King dedicated his life to love and to justice between fellow human beings. He died in the cause of that effort. In this difficult day, in this difficult time for the United States, it's perhaps well to ask what kind of a nation we are and what direction we want to move in. For those of you who are black -- considering the evidence evidently is that there were white people who were responsible -- you can be filled with bitterness, and with hatred, and a desire for revenge. 马丁·路德·金一生致力于人与人之间的爱与正义。他为此献出了生命。在这个困难的日子里,在这个对美国来说困难的时刻,也许值得问一问我们是一个什么样的国家,我们想要走向哪个方向。对于你们中那些是黑人的人——考虑到证据显然表明是白人负有责任——你们可能会充满痛苦、仇恨和复仇的欲望。
We can move in that direction as a country, in greater polarization -- black people amongst blacks, and white amongst whites, filled with hatred toward one another. Or we can make an effort, as Martin Luther King did, to understand, and to comprehend, and replace that violence, that stain of bloodshed that has spread across our land, with an effort to understand, compassion, and love. 我们可以作为一个国家朝着那个方向前进,走向更大的两极分化——黑人与黑人之间,白人与白人之间,彼此充满仇恨。或者我们可以像马丁·路德·金那样努力去理解,去领悟,用理解、同情和爱来取代那种暴力,那种已经蔓延到我们土地上的血迹斑斑。
For those of you who are black and are tempted to fill with -- be filled with hatred and mistrust of the injustice of such an act, against all white people, I would only say that I can also feel in my own heart the same kind of feeling. We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times. We've had difficult times in the past, but we -- and we will have difficult times in the future.
